Mayor Thomas M. Menino today declared April 2 “Autism Awareness Day” in the City of Boston and encouraged Boston building owners to light their buildings blue as part of a global initiative that kicks-off Autism Awareness Month and helps raise awareness about the disability.

“Autism affects so many Boston families, both emotionally and financially,” Mayor Menino said. “Today I’m asking our residents and building owners to do their part in raising awareness to shine a much-needed light on autism and its impacts.”

Each April 2, Autism Speaks celebrates Light It Up Blue along with the international autism community, in commemoration of the United Nations-sanctioned World Autism Awareness Day. Light It Up Blue is a unique global initiative. In honor of this historic day, many iconic landmarks, hotels, sporting venues, concert halls, museums, bridges and retail stores are among the hundreds of thousands of homes and communities that take part to Light It Up Blue.

Between 1999 and 2009, the Boston Public Schools estimated a 300% increase in the number of children diagnosed as being on the spectrum of autism. Currently, nearly 1,000 of Boston Public Schools’ 57,000 students have Autism Spectrum Diagnoses (ASD).

Autism now affects 1 in 88 children and 1 in 54 boys, with prevalence figures on the rise. Autism is the fastest-growing serious developmental disability in the U.S., though there remains no medical detection or cure. The disability costs a family $60,000 a year on average. In 2012, only $169 million in NIH funding went directly to autism research, a mere 0.55% of total NIH funding.

Police Arrest Suspect in Savin Hill Stabbing

At about 4pm on April 1, 2013, officers from c-11 (Dorcherster) responded to a call for a person stabbed.

On arrival officers observed EMS treating a female victim for multiple stab wounds.

The victim told officers her baby’s father asked to meet in the Savin Hill area so he could give her a pair of shoes for their eight month old child. The victim stated as she walked down Bay Street with her child in a stroller, the child’s father attacked her, and restrained her while his current girlfriend, Samia Jones allegedly stabbed her.

Jones also has a child with the victim’s baby’s father.

Boston Police Detectives executed a search warrant at the home of Samia Jones and placed her under arrest. Police obtaining a warrant for the baby’s father.

Samia Jones, 17 of Boston is charged with Assault with Intent to Murder. Arraigned in Dorchester District Court, Jones is being held on 50,000 bail.

The victim remains in stable condition. The baby was not injured.

Officers Arrest One for Gun Possession After Shooting

At about, 2:17pm, Sunday, March 31, 2013, officers from district B-2(Roxbury) responded to a radio call for a person shot in the area of Zeigler Street and Dearborn Street, Roxbury.

Upon arrival Officers observed a large group on the corner of Zeigler Street and Dearborn Street. Several individuals directed officers’ attention to a black male running with a severe limp up Dudley Street, stating “I think he’s shot”. Officers gave chase and found the male lying on the ground, out of breath between buildings. Officers observed the male to have no known injuries. The male stated he was limping because his leg gave out.

At the same time officers observed another male on a bicycle who matched the description of the suspect broadcasted on the radio. The male exclaimed, “my friend just been shot, he’s over there, he needs help”. Officers asked the male to remain where he was in order to answer a few questions. The male dropped his bicycle and began running through a crowd of people exiting from Easter Mass. Officers attempted to subdue the suspect who violently resisted and would not remove his hands from his waist. Officers recovered a firearm from the suspect’s waistband. The suspect was placed under arrest and transported to District B2 (Roxbury).

Jaylin Hawkins, 18, of Roxbury, was charged with: Possession of a Firearm, Possession of a Firearm on a Public Way, Assault by a Dangerous Weapon (Gun), Resisting Arrest and Disorderly conduct.

The Boston Police Department is actively investigating facts and circumstances surrounding this incident. Anyone with information is asked to call District B-2 (Roxbury) detectives at 617-343-4275.

Police Investigate Armed Robbery of 11 Bennington Street, East Boston

About 2:36 pm, Saturday, March 30, 2013, officers from district A-7 (East Boston) responded to a radio call for an armed robbery in progress in the area of 11 Bennington Street, East Boston (Pericol Gift Store).

On arrival, officers spoke with victim, who stated two males wearing all dark clothing and black masks, walk into his place of business. The victim stated he thought they were friends playing a prank on him until they displayed a firearm. The suspects took the victim into the back room where they attempted to handcuff him with flex cuffs. The victim stated he resisted and the suspects pistol whipped him and began smashing the glass countertops. The suspects were able to take an unknown amount of men’s and women’s jewelry.

The victim was transported to Tufts Medical Center witg non-life threatening injuries.
The Boston Police Department is actively investigating the facts and circumstances surrounding this incident. Anyone with information is asked to call District A-7 (East Boston) detectives at (617) 343-4234.

Youth Violence Strike Force Arrest Suspect for Gun Possession and Drugs

On March 28, 2013 at about 5:30pm officers assigned to the Youth Violence Strike Force on directed patrol in the area of Egleston Square, Jamaica Plain observed a suspect known to have been in the area of a shooting near the Dudley Triangle hours earlier.

Officers observed the suspect make numerous “security checks” with his left hand at the left front side of his waist. This activity, the earlier shooting and the officers training and experience suggested the suspect was trying to conceal a firearm.

Officers approached the suspect, Jordan Talik, 22 of Roxbury and discovered a loaded firearm in his possession. Talik also had a folding knife and a plastic bag with what appeared to be crack cocaine.

Talik, is charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition and Possession of Class B.

He will be arraigned in Roxbury District Court.
