Boston Police Department “Lights It Up Blue” for Autism Awareness Day

Mayor Menino Encourages Boston Building Owners to “Light It Up Blue” for Autism Awareness

Boston Police Headquarters “Lights It Up Blue” for Autism Awareness Day!

HQ AutismThe Mayor proclaims April 2 “Autism Awareness Day” in the City of Boston

Mayor Thomas M. Menino today declared April 2 “Autism Awareness Day” in the City of Boston and encouraged Boston building owners to light their buildings blue as part of a global initiative that kicks-off Autism Awareness Month and helps raise awareness about the disability.

“Autism affects so many Boston families, both emotionally and financially,” Mayor Menino said. “Today I’m asking our residents and building owners to do their part in raising awareness to shine a much-needed light on autism and its impacts.”

Each April 2, Autism Speaks celebrates Light It Up Blue along with the international autism community, in commemoration of the United Nations-sanctioned World Autism Awareness Day. Light It Up Blue is a unique global initiative. In honor of this historic day, many iconic landmarks, hotels, sporting venues, concert halls, museums, bridges and retail stores are among the hundreds of thousands of homes and communities that take part to Light It Up Blue.

Between 1999 and 2009, the Boston Public Schools estimated a 300% increase in the number of children diagnosed as being on the spectrum of autism. Currently, nearly 1,000 of Boston Public Schools’ 57,000 students have Autism Spectrum Diagnoses (ASD).

Autism now affects 1 in 88 children and 1 in 54 boys, with prevalence figures on the rise. Autism is the fastest-growing serious developmental disability in the U.S., though there remains no medical detection or cure. The disability costs a family $60,000 a year on average. In 2012, only $169 million in NIH funding went directly to autism research, a mere 0.55% of total NIH funding.
