Dear Residents,

During the past two weeks there have been several instances of the homes of elderly residents being broken into (or attempts) during the night-time hours in the River St / Dedham Line area.  These breaks have taken place while the elderly residents were home.

The Boston Police and Dedham Police would like to request your assistance in this matter.  Please be alert for strangers in your neighborhood, watch for people who are unknown to you entering or leaving your neighbors homes, especially if the neighbors are elderly.

If you make any observations of this nature, please call 911 immediately with a full description of the individual.

If you have any other information which you believe could be helpful to the Boston Police in putting a stop to these housebreaks and apprehending the person responsible, you can call District 18 Detectives at (617) 343-5607, or if you wish to remain anonymous you can call the Boston Police TIPS line at 1-800-494-8477.

Please help us protect your neighborhood and your belongings.

Heroic BPD Officers Capture Armed and Dangerous Suspect: Suspect Threatens Officers with Loaded Firearm

Yesterday Boston Police captured an armed and dangerous suspect after he pointed a loaded firearm at officers. The suspect, Josiah Sterling, 22, of West Roxbury was arrested and charged with the Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Carrying a Loaded Firearm, Assault by Means of a Dangerous Weapon (gun) and Resisting Arrest.

On Tuesday, December 13, 2011, officers from District B-3 (Mattapan) and members of the Youth Violence Strike Force (Gang Unit) established surveillance in the area of Mattapan Square and River Street based on information that they had received relative to an individual known to them who was in possession of a firearm. At around 11:30am, officers observed an individual matching the suspect’s description walking through a parking lot in the area of 435 River Street. As the suspect exited the parking lot and made a right turn onto River Street, officers, who were familiar with the suspect, called out his name.

Upon hearing his name, the suspect turned, looked at officers and attempted to flee. As the suspect fled down River Street, officers observed that the suspect’s stride was visibly altered and he was clutching at his side consistent with someone in possession of a firearm. As a result of the observations made, officers, trained in the traits and characteristics of an armed gunman, approached the suspect with caution.

Officers now engaged in a foot pursuit followed the suspect through a parking lot in the area of 431 River Street. While running behind the suspect, officers could see that the suspect was carrying a gun in his right hand. Officers observed the suspect attempt to run into the front door of 431 River Street but, when the suspect noticed that an officer was running right behind him, the suspect turned and ran along the side of the building. While pursuing the suspect around the building, officers lost sight of the suspect momentarily.

When officers were able to regain a visual on the suspect, officers observed the suspect pointing his firearm at the officer. Seeing the suspect pointing a firearm in his direction, the officer, fearing for his life and safety, discharged one round from his department issued firearm.

The suspect was not struck and continued to run around the building where he again encountered an officer and ran toward that officer again pointing his firearm.

As the suspect ran towards the front of the building, several officers moved in attempted to subdue the suspect. After a violent and lengthy struggle, officers were able to take the suspect into custody. Once secured, officers recovered a loaded revolver from the suspect.
