WHY: Nationwide Prescription Drug Take-back Day is a collaborative effort to ensure the proper disposal of expired or unused medication that has the potential to be abused or harmful to the environment. Many people are not aware that expired and unused medicines are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the United States are increasing at alarming rates and studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends. This program is to assist individuals in restricting access to harmful prescription narcotics and also provides an opportunity to safely dispose of these hazardous materials by keeping them out of the water supply. Too often individuals dispose of such medication by flushing and therefore potentially exposing them to the water supply

A BPDNews Reader Helps Fugitive Unit Nab ‘Most Wanted’ Suspect and his Gun-toting Sidekick
A recent suspect featured on the BPDNews ‘Most Wanted’ page was nabbed within days of joining the list of fugitives featured weekly on BPD’s Most Wanted Monday. Last week the Crime Stoppers Unit received information from the community relative to the whereabouts of wanted suspect 22-year-old Juan Shanks. Shanks had two outstanding warrants out of Dorchester District Court for Assault and Battery on a Police Officer, Resisting Arrest, Threats to Commit Crime, Disorderly Conduct and Disturbing the Peace.
On April 19, 2012 at 7:05pm, officers began surveillance of the basketball courts in the area of 450 Old Colony Ave in South Boston. Officers soon observed Shanks in the area of the courts. Due to the nature of the warrants and Shanks’ violent history regarding arrest attempts, officers called for multiple units to assist. Officers soon observed Shanks approach a nearby vehicle and engage the individuals inside the car in conversation. Shanks then entered the vehicle with the other occupants.
At that time, the Fugitive Unit approached the vehicle in an attempt to place Shanks under arrest. For safety reasons, officers requested that all occupants show their hands. Shanks and another occupant refused. As the officers opened the vehicle door to take Shanks into custody a brief struggle ensued. As the same time another occupant stated to officers “he put it in my pocket, he put it in my pocket” as he motioned toward Shanks. Officers then conducted a pat frisk on the second occupant feeling a hard object immediately recognized by officers to be a firearm. Officers recovered a loaded semi-automatic weapon from the 23 year-old male suspect and placed him in custody for unlawful possession of a firearm, carrying a loaded firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.
Shanks was also taken into custody on his outstanding warrant and subsequently removed from the BPD’s Most Wanted Monday list.

Attention College Students: Marathon Weekend Safety Message, Celebrating Responsibly and Safety Update
Dear Students,
I hope you are all anticipating the warmer weather and are looking forward to the end of another school year. On
behalf of the Boston Police Department I want to take this opportunity, as I often do, to offer several safety tips and
to give you some useful information for the upcoming holiday weekend, which will include the Boston Marathon and
all related activities beginning on Friday, April 13th.
One event that signals the start of spring in Boston is the Boston Marathon. Like any major public event there is
always great concern about your safety and the safety of those who come to Boston to run, watch and enjoy. Both
events present public safety challenges and we want to ensure that you are informed, that you are safe
and that you conduct yourself appropriately.
On marathon Monday there will be large crowds, restricted access and a large police presence along the marathon route starting in Audubon Circle and continuing through the Back Bay. There will be access restrictions on certain streets which may make getting around a bit more challenging. There will be a zero tolerance policy towards public drinking, open containers of alcohol and intoxication. Also, the Boston Police would like to remind you not to congregate on rooftops, fire escapes and porches. There have been several incidents in the past where overcrowding has resulted in tragedy. Your safety, and the safety of the public, is our primary concern.
Another concern is the incidents of house breaks and street robberies. Please make sure you secure your off campus housing units when you leave and lock the doors at all times. Certain areas of the city experience higher levels of house breaks due to students forgetting to lock doors and windows. Please take your electronic devices of value home with you, or lock them up, since these are often attractive targets. Do not walk and talk on your phone or walk with headphones on of any kind. Electronic devices such as iPods, iPhones and expensive headphones are the target of individuals who assault students and take these devices. Try and walk with a companion and in well-lit areas. Please remember to always be aware of your surroundings and should you be approached comply with the perpetrators request. Your life is always more valuable than your property. Should you be the victim of a crime go directly to the local BPD district station and make a report.
It is our hope that you enjoy the holiday weekend festivities and celebrate in a safe and responsible manner. Please keep in mind that you all play a role in our effort to ensure that the City of Boston is a shining example of good sportsmanship and pride.
Superintendent William B. Evans

While directing traffic in and around the accident scene, officers observed a motor vehicle approaching the scene at a high rate of speed. As the car got closer to the scene, officers began waving at the operator in an effort to gain his attention so that they could instruct him to slow his approach. However, instead of slowing, the operator sped up. The suspect vehicle then attempted accelerate to away from the scene. After a brief pursuit, officers were able to stop the car. When officers instructed the suspect to turn his engine off, the suspect, instead, began fiddling with the knobs on his radio. Officers noted that the suspect appeared to be intoxicated given, not only for his decision to fiddle with radio knobs instead of the keys in his ignition, but his bloodshot eyes and an odor of alcohol emanating from his person.
