Candles, Wine and the Eucharist Lands Suspect Under Arrest

At about 7:31am on Wednesday, December 12, 2012, officers from District D-4 (South End) responded to a radio call for a breaking and entering in progress at Cathedral Church, 75 Union Park, Boston.

Officer spoke with a witness on scene, who stated he found unauthorized lit candles throughout the entire church including the attic and the basement. In fear of having the church burn down, the witness called 911 when he found a man inside the front storage area behind the altar. The male suspect, later identified as Jorge Jose Guvara, was found lying on the ground with an opened bottle of sacramental wine, and opened container of the Eucharist, as well as several battery operated candles lit all around him. All of the cabinets and drawers were opened in the chapel.

Officers searched the church for any further damage and found broken candles in the basement chapel. The suspect (Guvara) stated he came to the church in search of peace.

Suspect Jorge Jose Guvara, 26, of Quincy, was arrested for Breaking and Entering with intent to commit a felony.
