Boston Police Identify Suspect in Early Morning Roxbury Fire

Arson Investigation Continues

Early this morning around 12:48AM, officers from District E-13 (Jamaica Plain) responded to 71 Westminster Ave. in Roxbury for an explosion/fire.

On arrival, officers observed the building fully engulfed with Boston Fire on scene along with EMS. The explosion/fire affected approximately 20 plus apartments but all the occupants of the building were evacuated successfully.

While on scene, officers were notified that an individual later identified as suspect, Mohamed Abdul Jabar, 28 of Medford had self-applied to BMC and was then transferred to the burn unit at MGH. The suspect is currently being treated in intensive care with 2nd degree burns to his arms, hands and face. His injuries are non-life threatening.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the fire was the result of a failed suicide attempt by the suspect. It also appears that he does not live at that location but may have been in a relative’s apartment.

The suspect is expected to face a host of charges of Arson and Attempted Murder.
