Vigilant Officers Nab Newbury Street Burglar

Thief Caught in the Act Possibly Connected to Multiple High-End Theft

On July 13, 2011 at approximately 1:47am, vigilant officers nabbed a thief making an attempt to burglarize a store. 42 year old Antonio Roman (spelling correction) is believed to be connected to numerous high-end breaks in the Newbury Street area.

Shortly before 2:00am, officers from District D-4 (South End) patrolling the alleys of Newbury Street came upon a male wearing all black. The officers observed the male jump from an air conditioning unit in the rear alley of 251 Newbury Street (BLVD Boston). Officers, aware of recent breaks, stopped the suspect to further investigate.

Officers asked the suspect what he was doing there and he answered that he was simply going to the bathroom.   As officers spoke to the suspect, they noticed a backpack on the air conditioning unit from where the suspect had previously jumped. As officers continued to talk to the suspect, he became visibly nervous, breathing heavy and sweating. Officers then inspected the bag and noticed that it contained a large pry bar/ hammer tool, latex gloves, leather gloves, a black mask, a head lamp and a Leatherman tool.

Based on the time of night, past similar incidents in the area, the location and the items recovered from his bag, officers opted to detain the suspect for further investigation.

The suspect, post Miranda, admitted that he was about to get his tools in order to break through the window to steal some shoes and clothes when he was caught in the act by officers.

Roman is believed to be responsible for numerous breaks in the area over the past several months. The investigation continues at this time.

Antonio Roman, 42, of Boston was charged with Attempted Breaking and Entering and Possession of Burglarious Tools for last night’s incident but will face further charges in the near future for the other incidents.
