UPDATE TO DEATH INVESTIGATION ON HOMESTEAD STREET:
VICTIM IDENTIFIED
On Friday, April 24, 2009, at approximately 11:40 am, officers assigned to District B-2 (Roxbury), responded to the area of 71 Homestead Street for a report of a person shot.
Officers arrived on-scene and located an 18-year-old male suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Despite the efforts of Boston EMS the victim was pronounced on-scene.
The victim has been identified as John Davis, 18, of Roxbury.
The Boston Police Homicide Unit is actively investigating the facts and circumstances of this incident. UPDATE: Boston Police Investigate Assaults in the North End Investigators Release a Suspect Composite and Surveillance Video
The Boston Police Department continues to investigate two recent assault incidents which occurred in the North End. It remains unclear if these incidents are connected to each other or if they are in any way connected to previously reported incidents dating back to last summer.
Boston Police have increased patrols in the area and are strongly urging community members to be vigilant and to come forward with any information related to these incidents.
Police are providing a sketch of the suspect responsible for the incident that occurred on April 24, 2009. In addition, BPD is releasing a surveillance video associated with the incident that occurred on April 4, 2009.
Incident Descriptions
On April 24, 2009 around 9:30pm, a victim reported to officers that she was assaulted by a male suspect while walking in the area of Prince Street at the DeFilippo playground in the North End. The victim fought off her attacker and was able to escape with minor scrapes.
The suspect is described as 5’10” male with an olive complexion wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, dark blue jeans, and sneakers. In addition, the suspect is reported to have spoken with an unknown accent.

On April 4, 2009 at approximately 2:30am, a victim was walking in the vicinity of the North Bennet Court when she was pushed by the suspect who apparently intended to assault the victim. The victim was able to fight off the suspect and escape without injury.
The suspect is described as a 30 year old light skinned Hispanic or Italian male about 5’5” male with an olive complexion with dark sideburns and large brown eyes wearing a light colored jacket, and blue jeans.
There is surveillance video available related to the above incident.

TIPS FOR ENSURING PERSONAL SAFETY
Always be aware of your surroundings, especially at night. When parking, walking or returning to your car, remain in well-lit and populated areas.
Wear sneakers or shoes that allow for added mobility.
Be watchful and aware. Keep your head up. Make quick eye contact with those around you and be observant of passing vehicles.
Don’t become distracted by talking on a cell phone or listening to an iPod/similar device.
Avoid walking alone late at night. Walk with friends and people you know.
Keep a whistle within reach. If you feel threatened, use the whistle to signal residents that you need assistance.
Yelling “Fire!” “Help!” and/or “Rape!” are ways of drawing attention and alerting people that you need help.

Hold your car keys in your hand to use as a weapon against an attacker.
Carry a cell phone.
Call ahead to your destination to alert them that you’re on your way. Make sure they expect you at a certain time, so that in the event you fail to show up, they’ll know enough to begin looking for you.
Walk with confidence. Be assertive. Don’t let anyone violate your space. Trust your instincts. Know this: anyone at anytime can be a victim of crime. Don’t assume, “IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN TO ME.”
If an unarmed attacker confronts you, believe in your ability to scare, distract, or even incapacitate the attacker enough to escape.
If you think that someone is following you, switch direction or cross the street. Walk toward an open store, restaurant or residence.

DAILY INCIDENTS FOR MONDAY, APRIL 27, 2009
RIGHT UNIFORM … WRONG FIELD
At about 12:11am, on Sunday, April 26, 2009, officers from Area B-2 (Roxbury) responded to a radio call for a person breaking into a residence in the area of 42 Hartwell Street. On arrival, officers spoke to one of the residents who stated she was awoken by the sound of breaking glass. The resident further stated that upon looking out the window, she observed a male in a baseball uniform throwing rocks at the house. The victim further stated that the suspect used to live in the building. When she yelled at him, the suspect fled the area on foot. Officers promptly broadcast the following description: “Be on the look out for a man in a baseball uniform seen throwing rocks in the area of 42 Hartwell Street.” Officers observed damage to the home. Specifically, officers observed several broken windows. Officers proceeded to search the area, but were unable to locate the suspect. In short time, thou, officers received another call saying that the suspect had returned to the location. Once on scene, officers observed and located an individual wearing a baseball uniform.
After the suspect was positively identified by witnesses, officers arrested Manuel Rosario, 51, of Boston and charged him with the Willful & Malicious Destruction of Property and Attempted Breaking & Entering (nighttime).
POLICE ARREST ONE FOR BREAKING INTO CARS IN JAMAICA PLAIN
At about 4:09am, on Monday, April 27, 2009, officers responded to a radio call for a person breaking into a car in the area of Atherton and Copley Streets in Jamaica Plain. On arrival, officers spoke to the owner of the car who stated that she saw the suspect break into her car. The victim stated that the suspect was wearing a red hat, red hood and dark pants. In short time, officers located an individual fitting the description of the suspect. The suspect was then brought back to the scene of crime for identification purposes. Once there, witnesses were able to positively identify the suspect. A search of the suspect enabled officers to locate and take possession of items reported stolen from the victim’s motor vehicle.
Officers arrested Archie Barco, 24, of Boston and charged him with Breaking & Entering a Motor Vehicle.

DRIVING THE WRONG WAY ON A ONE WAY LANDS ONE IN CUSTODY FOR O-U-I
At about 1:51am, on Sunday, April 26, 2009, officers from Area C-6 (South Boston) responded to a radio call for a motor vehicle accident in the area of Glynn Way and Mass Ave. On arrival, officers observed a motor vehicle facing the wrong way on a section of the roadway marked ‘One Way’. Officers further observed that the ‘One Way’ sign had been knocked to the ground as a result of the collision. Officers spoke to witnesses who stated that they observed the motor vehicle attempt go the wrong way on the one way ramp. When officers located the operator of the motor vehicle, he was being treated by EMS. While talking to the operator, officers observed that the operator appeared to be intoxicated given his slurred speech, red or glassy eyes and an odor of alcohol coming off his breath and person. When asked if he’d been drinking, the operator stated, “I had 5 or 6 beers.” When asked to submit to a Field Sobriety Test, the operator refused.
Officers arrested Jose Rosario, 34, of Lynn and charged him with Operating Under the Influence (Alcohol).
BIKE PATROL FASTER THAN YOU THINK
At about 12:50am, on Saturday, April 25, 2009, officers from Area A-1 (Downtown), while assigned to bike patrol, observed a motor vehicle screech its tires and make an illegal lane change in the area of Charles Street. As a result, officers instructed the operator to pull over. However, instead of stopping, the operator accelerated and sped off in the direction of Boylston Street. While attempting to keep up with the car, officers observed the suspect fail to stop for a red light. Officers were able to reacquire the suspect in the area of Tremont Street. When instructed to stop, this time, the operator complied. Once stopped, officers instructed the operator to exit the vehicle.
Once outside the car, officers arrested Arya Zahedi, 27, of Boston and charged him with Failing to Stop for a Police Officer.

Postal Worker Arrested After Crashing Mail Truck
On Thursday, April 23, 2009, at approximately 4:09pm, Officers assigned to Area D-4 (South End/Back Bay), responded to the area of Albany Street for a report of a postal truck being involved in a motor vehicle accident.
Officers arrived on-scene and located a male, who identified himself, as the operator of the crashed postal truck. He informed officers that he was traveling on Herald Street when he was cut-off by another vehicle. He further stated he was forced to turn his vehicle into the guardrail in order to prevent striking the other vehicles. The postal truck sustained extensive front-end damage as a result of the impact.
The operator was unable to produce a valid drivers’ license to officers. A computer check through the Massachusetts Department Of Motor Vehicles showed his license status had been suspended as well as an outstanding warrant for his arrest.
Officers arrested Roy Triolo, 36, of Revere on the charges of Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended License and the outstanding arrest warrant.
