DAILY INCIDENTS FOR THURSDAY, JULY 31, 2008

No License, and Driving a Stolen Car Equals Jail
Yesterday afternoon around 2:41PM, officers from District B-3 (Mattapan) were on patrol in the area of Talbot Ave. and Washington St. when they performed a random query of a passing motor vehicle.
The query revealed that the car was stolen. Officers followed the car, conducted a traffic stop and requested of the operator her license and registration. The operator, not speaking to the registration question, stated to officers, “I’m gonna be truthful, I don’t have license!” Officers then informed the operator that the car was stolen and she honestly answered, “I didn’t know it was stolen.”
The suspect, Phyllis E. Jackson, 46, of Brockton was arrested and charged with Receiving a Stolen Motor Vehicle, and Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended License.
“Why pay when we can get it for free?”
At about 5:42pm on Wednesday, officers from District B-3 (Mattapan) responded to a call for two juveniles being held for shoplifting at Brooks Pharmacy at 90 River Street.
Upon arrival, officers were directed to the security office where they observed two juveniles, a 15-year-old female from Mattapan and a 13-year-old female from Dorchester, who were being held. The officers spoke to the Loss Prevention Agent from Brooks Pharmacy who stated that she had observed the females placing items throughout the store into their handbags. The officers were told that one of the suspects was very disrespectful, and when the officers questioned her, she was disrespectful and curt with them as well. The Loss Prevention Agent asked the females, before officers arrived, if they planned on paying for the items, at which time one of them responded, “Why pay when we can have it for free?”
The females were taken to District B-3 for booking and charged with Shoplifting under $50. The more verbal of the two suspect’s mother’s spoke to officers and said that although her daughter is not normally a nuisance, but it is her mouth that most often gets her in trouble.
Copper Wire Thieves Apprehended
This morning around 12:14AM, officers from District A-7 (East Boston) responded to the area of Geneva Ave. and Maverick Street for a call of suspicious activity, possibly individuals attempting to steal copper wire.
Officers, aware of past incidents of copper from the area, responded to the area with lights turned off to minimize the possibility alerting the suspects. On arrival, officers observed a female squatting down by a nearby telephone pole who immediately got up, and started walking towards a car all the while holding her cell phone as if talking to someone. Officers, having observed a thick roll of copper wiring next to where the suspect was first observed, stopped her to further investigate. Upon stopping the suspect, officers observed her to be sweating profusely and very nervous. Officers further checked the area and observed a red hacksaw underneath the car that the woman was getting into. It should be noted that the car was parked next to the wire and the pole that the woman was initially standing next to. During further investigation, officers observed another hacksaw in the front seat of the car, a wire tester, and a metal wire cutter.
While speaking to the suspect, officers were alerted by witnesses that there were two other individuals accompanying the female suspect who had walked down Cottage St. toward Gove Street. The witnesses further informed officers that they had approached the suspects and questioned them about their activity, and the suspects had offered to give them half in exchange for not saying anything. When questioned about the other two individuals, the suspect provided vague information regarding the two other suspects but admitted that she had been stealing the copper wire.
Officers, armed with the other suspects’ description, searched the area that they had been said to be walking in and found them. The two other suspects were stopped, and after questioning admitted to their part in the copper theft conspiracy, and the theft. Suspects, Lesli Bertini, 37 and Nicholas Bertini, 35 both of East Boston were arrested and charged with Possession of Burglarious Tools, Destruction of Personal Property and Attempted Larceny. The third suspect will be summonsed to court for Conspiracy.

Statement from Police Commissioner Ed Davis

re: Sentencing of Jose Ortiz
A police officer involved in a criminal narcotics enterprise is more than reprehensible. The disgraceful actions of Jose Ortiz betrayed the public trust and the Boston Police Department. His lengthy federal prison sentence speaks for itself. Boston Police continues to vigorously identify and root out police corruption and misconduct. Boston Police Seek Assistance to Locate Suspect from Wood Avenue Incident
At approximately 4:35AM today, officers from District E-18 (Hyde Park) responded to 274 Wood Ave. for a domestic violence incident involving a firearm.
On arrival, officers spoke to the victim of the incident who reported that her ex-boyfriend had assaulted her. The victim reported that she was at home earlier in the night when someone rang her doorbell. The victim reported that when her friend opened the door, the suspect pushed his way through the door and attacked the victim. The suspect assaulted her by punching her about the face and head area.
