DAILY INCIDENTS FOR THURSDAY, JANUARY 24, 2008

Who’s Telling the Truth?

About 8:43pm last night, district B-2 officers assigned to the Orchard Gardens Safe Street on patrol in the Dudley St. area were approached by an individual who reported to them that the building he works at as a security guard was broken into around 12:30am and that numerous items had been stolen including several laptops. The individual further informed officers that he had reviewed security videotapes of the incident, and that the suspect from the incident was standing on the corner of Dudley and Dearborn Streets.

Officers responded to the corner of Dudley St. and Dearborn St. where they stopped the identified suspect to further investigate the allegations. While speaking to the suspect, officers observed that he had a black carrying case over his shoulder and inquired of him what was in the case. The suspect replied that it was a lap top computer and that it belonged to him. At this time, the witness told officers that he was a bar located on Dudley St, when the suspect came in and asked if anyone was interested in buying a computer. The witness at this time gave offices his personal information, and left the scene.

After receiving the above information, officers placed the suspect under arrest. The suspect, while awaiting transport to the district station, then started making unsolicited statements. The suspect told officers that he knew the witness and that he and the witness had been smoking crack together the day before the items were stolen from the building. The suspect then informed officers that the suspect who was responsible for security of the building had advised him on how he could break into the building.

The suspect, Carlton Albert, 44, of Roxbury was arrested and charged with Receiving Stolen Property and transported to the station for booking. There, the suspect admitted to entering a building on Harrison Ave. numerous times during the early morning hours of 1/23/08 and stealing numerous items from that location which included cash, video cameras, computers and televisions. The suspect went on to tell officers that he had sold one of the laptop computers in the bar at Dudley St. and other items at other locations. Officers responded to the bar and found a patron who admitted to buying a computer from the suspect after he alleged that he house had burned down and that he was in desperate need of money.

This incident is being further investigated to determine any connection between the suspect and the witness.

Come Over for What?

At approximately 9:20pm last night, officers from district D-4 placed suspect, Bobby Stevens, 36, of Roxbury and charged him with Armed Robbery.

Officers initially responded to 270 Huntington Ave for an armed robbery in progress. On arrival, officers were met by the victim in the lobby of the building. The victim told officers that he had just been robbed at gunpoint by two black males in the elevator while getting off on the seventh floor. Officers responded to the seventh floor via elevator with the victim and as the door opened on the seventh floor, the victim yelled “That’s him! That’s one them that robbed me!”

Officers then interviewed the victim who reported that a female friend of his who lives in the building called him, and asked him to come “chill” and to bring some money for pizza. The victim reported that when he arrived at his friend’s house he rang the doorbell and a voice he recognized as the voice of a male fried of his female friend answered the over the intercom system and buzzed him into the lobby. The victim reported that he then got on the elevator to the seventh floor and as he exited two males he recognized as being friends with his female friend pushed him back into the elevator. The suspects, one armed with a gun, the other armed with an ice pick, then robbed him of his wallet with money, sidekick cell phone, and regular cell phone.

Officers responded to the apartment but were unable to locate neither victim’s female friend nor the other male involved in the robbery.

Very Indecent Exposure

This morning around 9:50am, and officer from District B-2 informed other officers that while in his personal vehicle he observed a male known to him standing in the vicinity of Kemble St. and Magazine St. exposing himself to passersby by opening up his blouse and shaking his breasts at passing cars causing cars to stop and cause a traffic to back up.

Officers responded to the above location where they located the suspect, James D. Rogers, 26, of Dorchester and arrested him charging him with Indecent Exposure, and Disorderly Conduct.

Two Suspects Arrested for Breaking into Romney Campaign Headquarters

About 12:43am this morning, officers from District A-1 responded to 585 Commercial St. in Boston for a breaking and entering in progress. Officers were informed by Operations that the suspects had been observed via security cameras breaking into the back corner office and stealing computers by a security guard.

On arrival, officers observed a car exiting the parking lot abutting 585 Commercial Street. Officers stopped the car for further investigation to determine if they were connected to the breaking and entering. The suspects were ordered out of the car and while doing so two open bottles of beer fell out the car. The suspects were detained and subsequently positively identified by the security guard. After the suspects were removed from the car, officers located an Apple IMac box in the back seat long with two crowbars.

Suspects, Daniel J. Bradley, 28, and Michael J. Sauer, 30, both of Cambridge were arrested and charged with Breaking and Entering with the Intent to Commit a Felony and Possession of Burglarious Tools. The operator of the car, suspect, Sauer, was also cited for Drinking Alcohol from and Open Container in a Motor Vehicle. The second suspect, Bradley, was subsequently discovered to have six outstanding warrants from several courts for 1) Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended License 2) Destruction of Property 3) Possession of Class A 4) Breaking and Entering and 5) two warrants for Receiving Stolen Property.

The building was canvassed by officers along with the Manager of the Campaign Headquarters to determine if anything was missing but no other items were observed to be missing. Officers were however able to make note of two windows on the first level of the building that had pry marks. The suspects’ car was towed to be processed by area detectives.

At this time, no connection has been found between this incident and a prior breaking and entering incident at Romney Headquarters. Detectives however, as in every case, will investigate to determine if there is a link between the two incidents.

BOSTON POLICE EXECUTE CRACKDOWN ON VIOLENT CRIMINALS

Multi-Agency Effort Removes 67 Fugitives From City Streets
Commissioner Davis Orders Immediate Increase of Police Presence

In response to the recent increase of violent activity, the Boston Police Department in partnership with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies executed a massive warrant sweep netting 67 arrests so far. The operation specifically targeted fugitives who were wanted on drug and gang-related charges.

The concerted effort took place over the past 24 hours and remains ongoing. The sweep utilized resources from the Boston Police Youth Violence Strike Force, the Fugitive and Apprehension Team, the Boston Regional Intelligence Center, the FBI, the Massachusetts State Police, the Parole Department, the US Marshals and Boston Police officers from the local District Stations. The joint effort of participating agencies highlights our commitment towards eradicating firearm activity and gang violence from city streets.

The goal of the operation is to send a clear message to criminals that gun violence will not be tolerated in our community. The roundup is focused on known offenders, many of whom are active gang members. At this stage of the operation, officers have nabbed 67 criminals, seized 4 guns and netted various narcotics including marijuana, cocaine and heroine.

In addition to warrant sweeps, the Boston Police Department is aggressively undertaking the following initiatives to prevent further incidents:
· Community members can anticipate a significant increase of uniform presence.
· Detectives are canvassing neighborhoods for investigative leads.
· Homicide investigators are aggressively pursuing new leads uncovered as a result of the sweep.
· The patrol force is closely monitoring the activity and whereabouts of known gang associates.
· Our intelligence unit along with state and federal partners are developing profiles of targets engaged in violent behavior.
· The Department and specialized units such as Crimestoppers will be proactively engaging community members by distributing anonymous Text-A-Tip pamphlets and keeping residents informed of ongoing efforts.

TIPS FOR ENSURING YOUR PERSONAL SAFETY:
· Always be aware of your surroundings, especially at night. When parking, walking or returning to your car, remain in well-lit and populated areas.
· Wear sneakers or shoes that allow for added mobility.
· Be watchful and aware. Keep your head up. Make quick eye contact with those around you and be observant of passing vehicles. Don’t become distracted by talking on a cell phone or listening to an iPod/similar device.
· Avoid walking alone late at night. Walk with friends and people you know.
· Keep a whistle within reach. If you feel threatened, use the whistle to signal residents that you need assistance. Yelling “Fire!” “Help!” and/or “Rape!” are ways of drawing attention and alerting people that you need help.
· Hold your car keys in your hand to use as a weapon against an attacker.
· Carry a cell phone.
· Call ahead to your destination to alert them that you’re on your way. Make sure they expect you at a certain time, so that in the event you fail to show up, they'll know enough to begin looking for you.
· Walk with confidence. Be assertive. Don’t let anyone violate your space. Trust your instincts. Know this: anyone at anytime can be a victim of crime. Don’t assume, "IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN TO ME."
· If an unarmed attacker confronts you, believe in your ability to scare, distract, or even incapacitate the attacker enough to escape.
· If you think that someone is following you, switch direction or cross the street. Walk toward an open store, restaurant or residence.
