Teaming Up for Safe Streets
Police Commissioner Ed Davis Announces New Community Policing Effort
On March 10, 2007, Police Commissioner Ed Davis will institute the Boston Police Department’s latest community policing effort focused on a proactive and preventative crime reduction strategy. Commissioner Davis will deploy prevention teams known as ‘Safe Street Teams’ in areas experiencing disorder and violent crime.
Three teams comprised of six officers will be deployed to three areas in the city including Downtown, Grove Hall and Bowdoin and Geneva. A Boston Police Sergeant will direct each team and their walking beat will cover approximately several city blocks. This program is an opportunity to decrease the crime rate and improve police-community relations in each Safe Street Team’s assigned area. This new deployment will allow officers to have sustained, meaningful contact with business owners and families and provide a valuable opportunity to address quality of life issues effecting local residents.
Police Commissioner Davis stated, “This commitment is necessary to reduce resident’s fear in chronic high crime areas. I am confident that this strategy is an effective way for Boston Police officers to continue to strengthen ties with our communities, address quality of life issues and deter crime.”
Each ‘Safe Street Team’ is considered a long-term assignment. The program will expand with the graduation of each new Police Academy class. Deployment will be effective as of Saturday, March 10, 2007, however, the selection process for each permanent team continues.
Boston Police Neighborhood Drug Units Make Substantial Drug Arrests
Today members of both the Area E and Area B Drug Units in conjunction with the Drug Control Unit are pleased to announce significant drug seizures and arrests in several Boston neighborhoods.
Police Commissioner Ed Davis stated, “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the officers for their ceaseless efforts to put an end to illegal drug activity. These arrests send a clear message that the Boston Police Department will not tolerate individuals who prey on our community.”
On March 8, 2007, officers from the Area B Neighborhood Drug Unit and the Drug Control Unit executed a search warrant at 151 Homestead in Roxbury. As a result of the warrant, officers arrested Alexander Maldonado-Coriano, 29, of Roxbury and Narciso Agron, 34, of Roxbury and charged both suspects with Trafficking Class B Drugs (Cocaine). In addition to the arrests, officers seized significant amounts of cocaine.
Additionally, on March 8, 2007, again, officers from the Area B Neighborhood Drug Unit executed a search warrant at 19 Fessenden Street in Mattapan. As a result of the search, officers arrested Keon Leary, 27, of Mattapan and charged him with Possession and the Intent to Distribute Class A, B & D Drugs. Officers also recovered various amounts of marijuana, cocaine and ecstasy.
As a result of a mid-December drug investigation, officers from the Area E Neighborhood Drug Unit and the Drug Control Unit arrested Carlos Alberto Rivera, 33, of Dorchester and charged him with Trafficking Class A Drugs, the Distribution of Class A Drugs Within a 1,000 Feet of a School Zone and Possession with the Intent to Distribute both Class A & B Drugs. “SOME DUDE GAVE ME THE CAR”
At about 6:15pm, on Wednesday, March 7, 2007, officers at District 11 took a report for a stolen motor vehicle. According to the victim, she had loaned her car to a friend, but, the friend never returned the car. Two days later, while on routine patrol, officers from District B-2 observed the motor vehicle traveling on Blue Hill Avenue. Officers then activated their emergency equipment (lights & sirens) and stopped the motor vehicle. When officers approached the car and asked the operator where he got the motor vehicle, the driver told officers, ”some dude gave me the car.” Officers then arrested Edward Harris, 23, of Roxbury and charged him with Using a Motor Vehicle Without Authority and Operating Without a License.
ROBBERY SUSPECT APPREHENDED
At about 6:35pm on Thursday, March 8, 2007, officers from the Youth Violence Strike Force observed 2 black males rummaging through a large, black leather bag. As the suspects rifled through the bag, officers observed the suspects smile and ‘high-five’ one another. As a result, officers then approached the suspects. Seeing this, the suspect holding the pocket book, stuffed the bag under his jacket and took off. After a short foot pursuit, officers then arrested a 16 year-old black male from Dorchester and charged him with Unarmed Robbery. A short time later, with help from the MBTA Police, the victim of the robbery was located at the Field’s Corner MBTA Station. According to the victim, he was sitting on the train, near one of the doors, when a group of kids walked up to him, grabbed his bag and then ran off the train.

While recovering the car, officers were then approached by a witness who stated that she observed a white female park the car and then nervously walk away from it. The description of the female walking away from the car just so happened to match the description of the victim. When officers further questioned the victim, the victim then changed her story.
