Rottweiler Attacks Several Victims including Two Small Dogs

On March 30, 2007 at approximately 11:23 pm, vigilant officers from District C-11 (Dorchester) responded to an on-sight incident at Dorchester Avenue and Howes Street.
Officers heard a screaming female and witnessed a male attempting to fend off an animal attack. The unleashed Rottweiler, which has a recent history of attack, was assailing a male victim as he held a small dog off the ground by its leash attempting to keep the small dog out of reach from the attacking animal.
Officers activated their emergency equipment attempting to distract the attacking animal and free the two victims and their small dogs. The Rottweiler then turned his attention towards the officers and lounged at one of them attempting to attack. At that time, the officer was forced to discharge his department firearm, which fatally wounded the Rottweiler.
The two small dogs were injured in the attack and were taken to Angel Memorial Hospital.
Detectives from the Firearm Discharge Investigation Team will investigate this incident.

Daily Incidents For March 31, 2007

Person shot in Mattapan
Yesterday at 6:10pm, officers from District 3 responded to a radio call for a person shot at Blue Hill Avenue and Wilmore Street. On arrival officers observed the victim being attended to by Boston EMS. Officers were informed that three black males walked up Wilmore Street from Norfolk Street, when one of the males began shooting striking the victim in the leg. The victim was transported to Boston Medical Center and treated for a non-life threatening injury.
Stabbing Victim Self Applied to Hospital
Last night around 11:26pm, officers from District 3 responded to a radio call for a victim of a stabbing at Carney Hospital. On arrival officers located a female victim suffering from a stab wound to the ankle. The victim stated she was walking in Mattapan Square when she got into a verbal exchange with an unknown black female, which escalated into a fistfight. The victim was stabbed in the ankle when they fell to the ground. The suspect fled the scene and the victim took a cab to the hospital. The victim was treated for a non-life threatening injury.
Two Guns Recovered After Shots Fired
At 12:46am, this morning officers from District 2 were on patrol in the Orchard Park Developments at the intersection of Eustis and Adams Streets when they heard gunshots. Officers immediately turned onto Adams Street and observed an unknown male walking in the middle of Adams Street. As officers drove towards the suspect, he entered a parked motor vehicle. When officers approached the vehicle on foot they observed a second suspect in the passenger seat. Officers observed a firearm at the feet of the second suspect. The first suspect stated to officers “I got one too officer”. Officers were able to secure both of the suspects and firearms without incident. William Anderson, 25, of Brighton and Christopher Keeter, 21 of Maine were both arrested and charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of a loaded Firearm and Unlawful Possession of Ammunition. Mr. Anderson with also is charged with Firearm Discharge within 500’ of a Dwelling. Officers did recover two firearms and ballistic evidence.
Two People Stabbed in South Boston
This morning around 3:05am, officers from District 6 observed a big fight on the side of the Shell Gas Station. Officers immediately call for additional units and were approached by first victim who lifted his shirt and showed officers a stab wound. Officers requested EMS and were attempting to settle the chaotic scene when officers located a second victim with a stab wound to the foot. One suspect was placed under arrest and the second suspect fled on foot towards W 3rd St wearing a white shirt and blue jeans. Officers observed the second suspect fitting that description heading up Bolton Towards D Street. The two victims were transported to Boston Medical Center and treated for non-life threatening injuries. Two suspects are currently receiving medical attention at Boston Medical Attention under police guard. As soon as their conditions allows both suspects will be booked at the District 6.

TONIGHT’S SHOOTING INCIDENTS, ONE FATAL, ONE CRITICAL

Earlier today around 3:46pm, officers from District 2 responded to the intersection of Columbia Rd. and Washington St. for a person shot. On arrival, offices located an 18 year-old victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to Boston Medical Center by ambulance with life threatening injuries. The victim, after arriving at the hospital, showed some preliminary signs of surviving his injuries. CLARIFICATION: This victim is currently on life support and not expected to survive.
At approximately 7:57pm today, officers from district B-3 responded to a report of a person shot at 69 McLellan St. in Dorchester. There, officers located a male victim in his early twenties suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency Medical personnel transported the victim by ambulance to Boston Medical Center. The victim was pronounced a short while after arriving at the hospital as a result of his injuries.
Boston Police Homicide Detectives are investigating both incidents, and urge any and everyone who was a witness to these incidents to report it. District B-3 Drug Unit Nets Drugs and Guns in Search Warrants as Part of Effort to Quell Escalating Neighborhood Violence

In recent months, officers from the District B-3 Drug Unit undertook an investigation of the Woodrow, Jones, Mountain Ave. and Jacob St. area due to increasing complaints by residents of drug activity and shots fired. As a result of intense monitoring of that area, officers discovered that drugs were being sold out of 6 Jacob St. Officers then launched an investigation and developed further proof that drugs were being sold out of that location based on surveillance and first hand knowledge. Based on the information gathered during their surveillance and investigation officers applied for and were granted a search warrant for 6 Jacob Street.
Today, Friday, March 30, 2007, officers from District B-3 Drug Unit armed with a Dorchester Court search reported to 6 Jacob St. and executed the search warrant. As a result of that search officers recovered and seized three firearms, over 50 rounds of ammunition, a large quantity of marijuana, some crack, and over $5,000. of U.S. currency.
Suspect, Omar Albert, 30, of Dorchester was arrested and charged with three counts of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Possession with Intent to Distribute Class D, and Possession with Intent to Distribute Class B. In addition to the arrested suspect, two other individuals will be summonsed to court on charges of Possession of a Class D substance, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm and Unlawful Possession of Ammunition.

B&E Suspect Arrested with “Fruits of the Crime” in His Pockets

At approximately 3:18pm today, March 30, 2007, officers from District 11 responded to 44 Draper St. in Dorchester for a suspicious briefcase on the stairs. There, officers located a briefcase and were told by residents that it was found on their porch with no knowledge of the owner. The briefcase, based on the officers’ observation, appeared to have been pried open and its contents rummaged. The briefcase was returned to the district, and the owner called notified and told that his briefcase had been found. Officers were informed that the briefcase was stolen when person(s) unknown broke into victim’s car.
The responding officers, while preparing to write a report on this incident, were notified of a suspect being booked for breaking into a car in the same area that the victim reported that his car had been broken into and his briefcase stolen. Further investigation during booking process revealed that the suspect being booked had in his possession a number of items that were reported to have been in the stolen briefcase. Among the items recovered from the suspect were the victim’s credit cards, personal identification, and personal papers. Suspect, Hector L. Martinez, 43, of Dorchester was booked and charged with Receiving Stolen Property, Breaking and Entering a Motor Vehicle, Possession of Burglarious Tools, and Larceny of Motor Vehicle Accessories over $250.

Boston Police Mountain Bike Unit Nets Five Arrests

On March 29, 2007 at approximately 5:22 pm, while on patrol in the area of Howard Avenue and Howland Street, officers from the Boston Police Mountain Bike Unit arrested Aric Williams, 36, of Dorchester on an outstanding warrant for Failure to Attend Jury Duty, Possession of Class D and Receiving Stolen Motor Vehicle.
That same evening around 7:07 pm, officers from the Mountain Bike Unit were riding on Hancock Street towards Cameron Street and observed a motor vehicle with the driver’s side door open while the engine was running. Officers could smell a very strong odor of marijuana coming from the motor vehicle. As a result, Jaoa Cardoso, 24, of Rhode Island, Otelino Goncalves, 21 of Lynn and Alberto Mendes, 22, Dorchester were all arrested and charged with Possession with Intent to Distribute Class D. Also arrested on outstanding warrants for Receiving Stolen Motor Vehicle and Distribution of Class B with in 1000’ of a School Zone was Steve Depina, 20, of Cambridge.
Officers recovered several bags of Marijuana from the suspects.

WARRANT SWEEP “OPERATION COURT SERVICE”

REMOVES SIX CRIMINALS FROM CITY STREETS
The mission of “Operation Court Service” was a proactive warrant sweep focused on individuals known to police, who have outstanding court issues within the City of Boston. Yesterday’s round up was a collaborative effort of resources including the Youth Violence Strike Force, Boston Police District B-2 (Roxbury), Boston Police District C-11 (Dorchester), the Boston Regional Intelligence Center, the Boston Police fugitive and Apprehension Unit, the Probation Department, the Parole Department, Suffolk County House of Correction, Department of Youth Services and Department of Corrections.
Police Commissioner Ed Davis stated, “This level of local coordination can have a substantial effect on public safety and criminal activity in our city. I applaud these officers and all of our local partners involved in this initiative for sending a clear message to our community that we will not allow predators to prey on our neighborhood. Boston residents should not have to raise their children in an environment of crime. Boston Police will persevere in our efforts to provide a safe community.”
“Operation Court Service” apprehended individuals responsible for a number of crimes ranging from but not limited to Assault and Battery, Drug Possession and Distribution, Larceny and Receiving Stolen Motor Vehicle.
The following suspects were arrested:
· Roberto Ramos, 18, of Dorchester Assault and Battery
· Joaquim Martins, 29, of Dorchester Possession with Intent to Distribute Class B
· Frederico Fernandes, 32, of Dorchester Larceny Over $250
· Michael Depina, 18, of Dorchester Possession of Alcoholic Beverages by person Under 21
· Gilson Veiga, 22, of Dorchester Providing False Name to Police and Operating Motor Vehicle Without a License
· Jamal Brodie, 19, of Dorchester Receiving Stolen Motor Vehicle and Possession with Intent to Distribute Class D

DAILY INCIDENTS FOR MARCH 30, 2007

THREE ARRESTED SMOKING CRACK IN CAR
At approximately 5:44 pm on Thursday, March 29, 2007, members of the District A-7 (East Boston) Drug Unit were in the vicinity of Border St. and White St. when they observed a white Jeep Cherokee pull over with its engine running. Officers observed the driver – later identified as James E. Smith, 38, of Stoneham – smoking from a metal object with a long hose, and believed that the suspect was smoking an illegal substance.
The suspect was then observed passing the object to a person sitting behind him, who was later identified as Miguel Ortiz, 36, of Stoneham. The vehicle traveled down Border St. toward Condor St. Officers approached the Jeep while it was stopped at Condor St. and Meridian St., and ordered the driver to put the vehicle in park and shut it off. The driver ignored the order and drove the car forward. Officers repeated the commands to shut off the car, to which the driver responded only with a blank stare. The front seat passenger, Cheryl Smith, 36, of Stoneham, repeatedly told the driver to “take off” and “keep going, don’t stop”. Officers recovered the metal pipe with tubing and found it to contain a residue that they believed to be crack cocaine. A bag with seven small pieces of rock believed to be crack cocaine was also found. All three suspects were placed under arrest and charged with Possession of a Class B Drug (Cocaine).
ARMED ROBBERS DON’T GET VERY FAR
At approximately 12:20 am on Friday, March 30, 2007, District C-11 (Dorchester) officers were dispatched for an armed robbery in progress. Officers operating an unmarked cruiser turned off the headlights as they turned onto Bushnell St., where they observed three males matching the description of the suspects. All three men were handcuffed, and officers found a firearm lying on the lawn where the suspects had been spotted. The suspects and the weapon were positively identified by the victim, who described the robbery to officers.
He stated that he went into his backyard and when he was walking down his driveway he saw three black males. After a verbal exchange that escalated into a shouting match, the victim threw his black nylon briefcase at the suspects and ran in the opposite direction on Verdun St., towards Carruth St. The suspects fled with the briefcase going the other way on Verdun St. The victim then called 911 while following the suspects and reported their whereabouts until he lost them cutting through a backyard. The path of the suspects was searched by officers and the victim’s briefcase was found with its contents emptied out. The bag and all its contents were returned to the victim. The suspects, Howard E. Thompson, 18, James Jamison, 18, and Kyle A. Jackson, 18, all of Dorchester, were all charged with Armed Robbery with a Firearm.
DRIVER REFUSES TO STOP FOR POLICE
At approximately 12:50 am on Friday, March 30, 2007, officers from District B-2 (Roxbury) were on routine patrol, and were responded to a radio call for a group of males on the corner of Stanwood and Normandy acting suspicious. Upon arrival, officers observed a brown car idling near the corner occupied by four individuals. As officers approached in their marked cruiser, the car pulled away from the curb. Officers activated their lights and siren, but the driver turned down Blue Hill Ave. and sped up, attempting to flee.
At the corner of Devon and Columbia, assisting officers pulled onto Devon St. with their siren and lights activated. The suspect attempted to swerve around the cruiser and slammed into a parked car. The driver attempted to drive around the cruiser again, driving into the cruiser while officers were still inside. The suspect attempted to flee on foot down Devon St. where he climbed a fence and attempted to cut through the backyard of a house on Geneva St., where he was apprehended.
Jayvon J. Lassiter, 23, of Dorchester, was arrested and charged with Assault and Battery with a Deadly Weapon on a Police Officer with a Motor Vehicle, Disorderly Person, Resisting Arrest, Leaving the Scene of Property Damage, Failure to Stop for a Police Officer, Operating Negligently to Endanger, and Operating without a License. When Mr. Lassiter was asked why he didn’t stop for police he stated, “I hate cops.” The three passengers were field interrogated and released.
