“AIM FOR PEACE” PROGRAM YIELDS OVER 380 FIREARMS AND COUNTING!

Gun Buy Back Press Conference pic 2-2.jpg

Program Launches High Tech Initiatives to Maximize Participation

Today, Mayor Thomas M. Menino and Superintendent in Chief Al Goslin, in conjunction with the Boston Police Department and numerous community and faith-based organizations, is pleased to announce that the 2006 Boston Gun Buyback “Aim For Peace” is exceeding expectations. As of today, the program has netted 382 firearms.

“The gun buyback program is off to an encouraging start,” Mayor Menino said. “We are confident that this program is sending a strong message that violence on the streets of Boston will not be tolerated.I am pleased that the community is coming forward in this effort to get guns off the streets and I look forward to the continued success of the program.”

With two weeks remaining, program coordinators continue to seek new and innovative ways to heighten awareness, increase participation and continue to spread a message of peace. Fresh from the release of the City's first Podcast and the unveiling of 30 ClearChannel billboards, “Aim for Peace” is utilizing high tech outreach specifically geared to engage Boston’s youth.

One initiative includes the Boston Buyback blog at www.bostonbuyback.org. This website contains regular updates, announcements and photos about the progress of the Buyback, as well as related initiatives, such as the "Start Peace" hip hop campaign.

Similar to the Boston Police Department blog www.bpdnews.com, the Buyback blog allows for the rapid and easy sharing of information with the public and the many “Aim for Peace” volunteers. Users are allowed to post "blog comments", including questions, ideas, anecdotes and more.

A second internet initiative includes a profile on the popular social networking site MySpace.com. The page is located at www.myspace.com/bostonbuyback, and has already collected over 100 MySpace "friends" and has been viewed over 500 times. "Friends" of the Buyback on MySpace include local high school students, hip hop artists and community activists. “Aim for Peace” has joined MySpace because of its enormous popularity with young people and its force in youth culture.

"We hope to reach Boston youth on MySpace who have firearms or know someone with one," stated Jed Hresko of the Chops Porter Institute, a volunteer who is serving as web-master for both sites, "but we also want to reach a much broader community of supporters from Boston and the metropolitan area who can spread the message of nonviolence and generate donations. My personal hope is to replicate what happened in the 90's buybacks with grassroots donations, such as suburban kids on MySpace taking up a $200 collection to get one gun off the street."

“We are confident that the gun buyback message is resonating with the community. We know that Grandmothers and other family members have been inspired to turn in guns owned by their children,” commented Reverend Shawn Harrison, Youth in Crisis Ministry, “We must continue to do everything possible to end senseless gun violence and I encourage individuals to maintain the momentum of the program’s success.”

A hotline, 1-888-GUNTIPS, has been established for individuals who do not wish to deliver a firearm to a designated location and would like to arrange for a private exchange. The hotline is also available for neighbors who wish to provide information related to criminal activity or can provide information leading to the whereabouts of a “community” firearm.

Welcome Weekly Dig Readers

BPDNews.com was recently profiled in the Weekly Dig.

“... BPDNews is a must-read, a daily ritual more Bostonians ought to be slurping up along with their morning coffee. It’s a running tally of the city’s nefarious doings, a public sounding board of cheers and jeers for the BPD, and a great way to check whether that popping sound from the direction of Codman Square last night was fireworks or worse. Within hours of a shooting or homicide, its precise coordinates are up on the blog, well before it hits the papers. Regular incident logs run through the most memorable events of the day, sometimes with a snappy bit of sarcasm in reserve for items light on body count but long on human stupidity. On a good day, there might be a spat over an error between Boston’s Finest and a local crime reporter, or even a beef with an elected official. In short, it’s almost too good to exist.”

Gun Buyback Exceeding All Expectations: Real Guns = Real Results

Program Partners Asking Local Corporations to Donate Funds
Every dollar received will be used to purchase gift cards in exchange for guns taken off the streets

The new Boston Gun Buyback Program is off to a strong start. As of this morning (June 14,2006), we have collected 100 firearms turned into police and community drop-off locations. As a result of the program’s success, funds for gift cards are running low. This is a “call to action” for local corporations to join our efforts to decrease youth violence and take guns off the streets of Boston.

“These are high-powered handguns that are used every day in crimes in our city”, commented Boston Police Deputy Superintendent Darrin Greeley. “Young men from the neighborhoods hardest hit by violence are laying down their arms in a major step towards peace.”

On Tuesday June 13th, a Ruger .22 caliber assault rifle with 2 high capacity clips was turned at a Hyde Park drop-off location. At a Dorchester site, an individual turned in a .45 semi-automatic in perfect condition. Monday’s collection included a .40 caliber Sig Sauer, a 9 mm Smith & Wesson, a .25 caliber handgun (all from young men of color in their twenties), and 2 handguns were turned into a minister in Grove Hall by a grandmother who found them in her grandson’s room.

“These are not junk guns from someone’s attic,” stated Jorge Martinez of Project Right, one of the community partners of the Buyback program. “Critics can feel free to live in our neighborhoods for a week and see if they’re happy to have these deadly weapons off the street.”

Mayor Thomas Menino, the Boston Police and community partners have developed a tight program, which effectively reaches out to Boston residents and turns away guns that are not in good condition.

“We will accept rifles and shotguns, but are not giving out gift cards for them,” stated Deputy Greeley. “At this rate we will run out of gift cards by end of today because participation in the program is so strong.”

Businesses or individuals wishing to support the program and take a gun off the street can send contributions to:

BuyBack Program
c/o Ten Point Coalition
215 Forest Hills Street
Jamaica Plain, MA 02130

Murder Suspect’s Cover Blown in Windy City

Members of the Youth Violence Strike Force and United States Marshall Service arrested 22-year-old Michael Bohannon in Chicago today, charging him with the 2002 murder of Adornous Hazelwood. Bohannon was taken into custody at a residence at 547 East 73rd Street, Chicago.

It is alleged that on the afternoon of April 1, 2002, Bohannon gunned down Hazelwood after a failed attempt earlier in the day. Hazelwood was shot while he was standing near a group of people just blocks from his home. He was taken to area hospital and pronounced dead a short time later.

This case was broadcast on America’s Most Wanted in February of this year. Since that airing many calls have come in with information as to Bohannon and his possible whereabouts. Investigators in Boston along with agents of the United States Marshall Service worked tirelessly on these tips that eventually led them to Chicago. Boston authorities working together with members of the Great Lakes Fugitive Task Force set up surveillance on the East 73rd Street address. Bohannon was observed as he came out onto a porch to water some flowers. Once authorities identified Bohannon, they surrounded the house and took him into custody without incident. Bohannon is scheduled for a Rendition Hearing in Chicago in the morning. If he chooses not to fight rendition, Bohannon could be back in Boston as early as tomorrow.

“The Boston Police Department continues to work tirelessly to bring murderers to justice,” Superintendent-in-Chief, Albert E. Goslin said of Bohannon’s arrest. “It may take time to build the case, to get it right, but this Department will never give up.” Chief Goslin also acknowledged the extraordinary efforts of the United States Marshall Service and their continued cooperation and support of the Boston Police.

Still First in the Nation

Since we launched BPDNews.com last November, we’ve heard from many other police departments who've asked us how they can start their own blog. One of those agencies was the Los Angeles Police Department. After some conversations with the people at BPDNews.com, the LAPD launched their own Blog a few weeks ago. Check it out. We think it’s very well done, and so do a lot of folks in the media, from the LA Times to the London Times.

Some of our readers have since informed us that various media outlets have been quick to anoint the LAPD blog as “the first to emanate from the police force of a major US city." To our amusement, this included one of our own local newspapers, who covered the LAPD launch and listed “Police from Karnataka, India, to Eden Prairie, Minn, (who) have started blogs and say they are happy with the results,” neglecting to mention the Boston blog in their very own backyard.

Which led to the question - who really was the first? For those of you keeping score, BPDNews was launched in November of 05. So far as we can tell, this makes us the first law enforcement blog anywhere (we apparently beat Mangalore, India, by a few weeks.) If you know of an official police blog that was launched sooner, please let us know. Till then, we’re happy to be known as the First in the Nation.

Press Release from Mayor Thomas M. Menino's Press Office

Mayor Announces New Alert Network
Increases Communication between Police and Local Residents

Mayor Thomas M. Menino joined area residents and members of the Boston Police Department today to announce a new pilot program called the Boston Police Alert Network that will send updated information to residents and business owners regarding area crimes and events. Mayor Menino is urging all residents to register for this service.

“This communication will help residents be more informed of what is happening in their neighborhoods, while also encouraging them to share information with police to help them solve crimes,” Mayor Menino said.

The Alert Network allows police to instantly update registered users about crime, emergencies and other important information. Information on fugitives, missing persons and unsolved cases will also be provided on alerts. There will also be a “Submit a Tip” feature on alerts allowing people to reply with tips and other information directly to police.

Today’s event was held at the Target store at the South Bay Center Mall. The idea for this pilot network came out of Mayor Menino’s Strategic Crime Council and collaboration with Target Corporation’s Safety City Initiative. Target is helping to fund the first year of the program.

“I would like to thank Target for their efforts in working with us and the Boston Police Department,” Mayor Menino added. “Target continues to be a great ally in our push to make our neighborhoods safe.”

Residents need to register online to receive these alerts. People can register at www.CitizenObserver.com and click on the Sign Up Now link.

There will be four types of alerts:
· Citizen Alerts – informs all registered users of a public safety concerns. Police will provide descriptions of incidents, actions taken and photographs when possible. Alerts will be delivered via e-mail and text messages;
· Business Alerts – targeted to specific business types, so businesses will receive information relevant to their business. Alerts will be delivered via fax, e-mail and text messages;
· Case Alerts – Police will automatically send information about open cases to all registered users. Alerts will be delivered via e-mail and text messages;
· Neighborhood Watch Group Alerts – Police will send targeted alerts to specific neighborhoods with information about crimes in the immediate area. Alerts will be delivered via e-mail and text message.

Members of the Mayor’s Strategic Crime Council, which include cabinet-level officials from a number of departments, meet on a weekly basis to discuss ways to reduce crime in Boston. The Council brings in external partners such as the Sheriff, Probation Department or DYS on an as-needed basis to discuss crime issues relevant to those agencies.

The Strategic Crime Council employs a six-pronged approach to addressing crime, which includes: a legislative agenda with regional and national outreach, the involvement of public health and healthcare agencies, targeted law enforcement strategies, education and awareness efforts, community outreach, and the judicial system changes.
