FBI releases preliminary Uniform Crime Report

The report, covering January through June of 2005, shows a 2.1% increase in murder nationwide and a .5% drop in violent crime.

As a whole, law enforcement agencies throughout the Nation reported a decrease of 0.5 percent in the number of violent crimes brought to their attention in the first half of 2005 when compared to figures reported for the first six months of 2004. The violent crime category includes murder, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. (From the FBI)
Boston reported 29 murders for the first 6 months of 2005. Below shows how that compares with other similar sized cities:
  • Baltimore: 137 murders
  • Cleveland: 55 murders
  • Kansas City: 56
  • Memphis: 60
  • Philadelphia: 176
  • Phoenix: 106
